August part Deux

Monday August 22 - set up computers for APSCN workshop and then continued to work on ECP computers and iPad issues.

Tuesday August 23 - Caught up the journal for the month so far.  Worked with Shelby on the ECP computers for Alma, Clarksville and Branch

Wednesday August 24 - went to Greenwood to set up ECP computers/scanner/printers.  about noon left for lunch and came back and finished up.  Then drove to Fort Smith to help Jan Carr get her ECP computer attached to her home network since she works mostly from home.  Then drove to Alma to set up Laura C computer since she is also based in Alma not just Greenwood.  Worked very late trying to get the laptop to accept scans from the printer/scanner.  the interface for that MFP is not very good and the user/pwd has to be entered on a number pad (old school texting style)

Thursday August 25 - CIV for Supt and then Supt meeting

Friday August 26 - Run CIV system for two programs

Monday August 29 - Caught up email and scheduled e-rate workshops and tried to work on scheduling tech workshop but was called for emergency CIV equipment check for PV.  Decided to put my time to good use since I would be close to Alma and would be close to Clarksville in the afternoon due to Westside school visit and packed up the ECP computers to try to deliver.  Checked out PV CIV and conversed with the principal and tech coordinator then headed to Alma and configured the ECP computers to the printer.  stopped to eat lunch and then to westside to set up and configure the replacement CIV equipment and to bring ours back home.  Harvie assisted.  Westside didn't get done until after 3:00 so I was unable to make it with the laptops to Clarksville.

August so far

This has been a very busy month and I haven't taken the needed time to keep the journal up-to-date.

August 1 - 5 was spent providing support for workshops, trying to clean clutter out of the network closets and sort through old equipment for discardability.  I also had a CIV over AYP that I managed the CIV system for.  I also had to take off a few afternoons for MIL health issues

August 8 - 12 was also spent providing support and setting up computers for various workshops at the coop.  I also did some troubleshooting and set up for CIV labs at schools including Mansfield, Westside, and Mountainburg.  Hartford and Hackett also.  Harvie and I did a test call to all the systems and made sure they were ready for school for the next week.  I began setting up ECP computers on Wednesday trying to get them ready ASAP.  Thursday I set up for some workshops and worked on ECP laptops and ran the Child Nutrition CIV.  Friday I presented IDEAS and iTunes U at the Paris multi-district conference.  I also had to take off a few afternoons due to MIL health issues.

August 15 - 19 was spend working mostly on the ECP laptops (there are 20 new laptops that we are trying to get out into the staff hands)  Thursday I went to Little Rock for a tech meeting with DIS.  Friday I took leave to go visit the doctor and to try and sort through MIL financial situation.

July 25, 26, 27, 28,

Monday - arrived at the coop and picked up CIV equipment to run tests at a couple of schools.  Harvie and I went to Mansfield and hooked up their system that had not been used in a few years and made sure it was working.  We then went to Mountainburg and talked to their tech guy and he said that the system was working he thought but when we went to check it, it was doing the same thing it had done when i was there the week before.  So we connected our spare system hooked up and tested all the connections and everything seemed to be in working order before we left.

Tuesday - Arrived early to set up computers at County Line school for ELF workshop.  after getting the computers delivered and placed on tables, Harvie and I did dial in tests for all the other CIV  systems that would be used for classes during the school year.  We contacted the Principals, Supt and Tech at each district that system did not work and some of them got right back to us and we did a second check.  we will continue to verify systems and work with facilitators and principals to make sure that the beginning of the year goes off without a hitch.  Also assisted Eric P with some computer set ups and discussed his BEE situation since it wasn't much better than ours.

Wednesday - Arrived early to make sure that all the computers would work for the ELF workshop.  Harvie and I went to Hackett after lunch and hooked up their system and verified that it was now working.  I stayed after Harvie went back to the coop to consult with the supt on ideas to provide filtering and spam catching for his district

Thursday - Worked with Shelby on computer issues after making sure that all workshops were running successfully.  Also made some changes to the web pages requested by Pat.  Also gathered up the computers from County Line and again consulted with Eric P about technology issues and possible workshops.  Also prepared lab for workshop that was requested at the last minute by presenters in another building.

Friday - Took Leave but worked from home on web page issues for Pat dealing with TIA and TA and CCSS information.  Will have to discuss this more on Tuesday when she returns to work.

Friday July 22 - Arrived at 7:32 due to reported outage with DIS .. had a very hard time pinpointing the issue because of the new DSL connection.  I will need to remember that we will still be able to get to the internet even if the T1 lines are down due to the DSL.   Also had issues with the connection in finance dept.  Not sure what fixed it but at about 10:20 go the issue solved.  Worked with Shelby to explain what was going on with the connection and how the DSL connected to our network.  Started creating patch cables for wiring closet and a bit more office cleaning.  Also added the APSCN SMS workshops to my calendar.

Week Catch up

Tuesday Night (at home) continued to work on trying to fix the web server issue to no avail

Wednesday 16th - arrived at Ozark Schools at 8:00 to assist the IDEAS registration for the Kindergarten and High School buildings.
Finished the registration around 12:00 and went to lunch with the Ozark Tech guys and discussed technology planning and e-rate and other technology issues while we enjoyed a home cooked fried chicken dinner at the Eagles club at Altus.
Arrived back at the coop around 1:00 and got busy working to fix the web server issue.  I was able to set up a temporary page with the 2 main links at first and then kept working and actually got a hobbled version of the server back up.  There are a lot of lost files and images due to the crash.
3:30 went to the DL lab to run the AAEA presentation.
5:00 left for home

Thursday 17th - Worked on installation of the new web server and the recreation of the pages as best I could with the missing files.  about 12:00 I got most of it set up and took a break and went to lunch.  I just was tired of typing and typing :)
After returning from lunch I was able to switch the new server on after a few more changes and adding all the users back in the system.  I still have work to do but, the core look and links are back up.  We will have to recover documents from the original creators (Marcia, Shane Gordan etc) before the site is completely back up.
Talked to Mr Fenter and Shelby about the progress on the BEE project and Mr. Fenter said he decided to purchase the Filter device rather than rent.  Also he was considering the purchase of the aggregator too.  I contacted Warren (DIS) to tell him our decision and see if that posed any problems.  He assured me that there was no problem and that I would have to purchase the devices from the state vendor and not DIS directly.  I will have to get PO etc.  Also talked to Shelby about upgrading the wireless connections in the buildings to provide better access and better management.  Also discussed improving our switches in the main buildings to managed switches that were capable of doing gigabit connectivity.
Left for home about 4:40

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

last night (Monday 14) I tried to remotely reboot the firewall to clear the cache and get ready for changes that need to be made.  It hung and computers at the coop were not able to reach the internet this morning.  I was aware of the situation (since I had caused it) and as soon as I got to work I corrected the issue and rebooted the firewall and now all is right in the internet world at WAESC.  I will still need to change the public number of the firewall to .14 but will wait until Wed night to do that and then go to Greenwood and fix the VPN connections for the ECP users there.

Goals for the day

  1. Continue entering IP number corrections in Google Docs to share with Shelby
  2. Work to configure PFSense to replace the IPCop in the near future
  3. Manage CIV session for Teacher eval in Conf room F

I was pretty busy yesterday and forgot to post my activities from last thursday and yesterday.
Feb 3 - attended IDEAS training on producing an on-line coure for IDEAS and then our monthly TCC meeting.

Feb 7 - Got to work at 7:45 and started getting the data out of the PD survey for the Fort Smith School District.  This is a long process and I worked on it all day as I worked on other things.  Fort Smith wanted the data seperated by buildings and they have a lot of buildings.. :)
Checked on messages and mail that I missed from being out with snow and meetings and leave the week before.  Communicated with Bridge (Scranton) about alternat date for IDEAS registration processing
Talked to Mr. Fenter about the B.E.E. project and determined that we would participate and to alleviate issues would use DIS for the bandwidth contract and rent the M86 filter from DIS and only use 1 line so we would use the current router as our aggregator.
Called DIS and got ticket for B.E.E. SD26151.
Received call from Warren (DIS) and set up process to get the ball rolling on the B.E.E. bandwidth project.
Received call from Ryan (Waldron) about e-rate and assisted him.
1:30 completed data for Fort Smith
1:45 conference call with David (Rabboar) about the new Media program additions.  In attendance were Shelby, Pat, Pam, and Linda.  We viewed the new system and responded to the additions and modifications that were made.  We determined that more explaination needed to be provided for users to make it more 'friendly'.  We will print out a screen shot and provide text to David.
3:00 talked to Shelby about B.E.E. project with Mr. Fenter
3:25 emailed Kathleen (Fort Smith) about how we wanted to deliver the data for her staff to manipulate to make it best suited for the schools

Checked out the set up for the BEE project and the effect of the new internet connection on bandwidth usage.
Friday, Jan 28 - I spent the day at Ozark middle school and Ozark junior high processing registrations for IDEAS and explaining what IDEAS makes available.  I still have the kindergarten and high school to do Feb 9th.  Loss of passwords for teachers that have moved to new districts and non-up-to-date information on recently hired new teachers (1 or 2 years and not always consistant) has made the process a little more difficult, but I pass along the address of IDEAS support and the information needed by IDEAS to correct those issues.

Tech Coord Meeting and Booneville IDEAS

Wednesday - hosted a monthly coop area tech coordinators meeting.  Dana Thompson discussed DIS service concerns and also discussed the B.E.E. Bandwidth initiative.  Warren assisted schools with Windows 2008 server concerns and further talked about actual environmental changes needed to participate in the B.E.E. initiative.  Everyone remarked on how valuable the information was.  After the meeting I worked to repair Hackett mailfilter that failed Tuesday.  I finally got it working and left the co-op about 5:30

Thursday - Went to Booneville and sat in the teachers workroom and registered teachers for IDEAS.  I reached everyone in grades 4 - 6 (33 teachers).  There were some new teachers that were not in the system and some others that had forgotten their passwords.  I provided the contact information for IDEAS and the information they would need to provide so that IDEAS could fix those accounts.
Came back to the co-op and made some settings changes to the Hackett Mailfilter because when the server rebooted the filter didn't restart.  Checked the settings by restarting the computer after allowing the mail to pass through for about 45 minutes.  Didn't start automatically.  Will have to work on this issue.

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Arrived at Ozark Elem at 8:00 and waited for Chad to arrive to begin registering teachers for IDEAS.  We got X teachers registered at the lower elementary site and X registered at the upper elementary site.  We also assisted X teachers in recovering their accounts.  There were some teachers that were new that were not in the system and provided information for them to contact IDEAS to get that worked out. We planned sessions for the remaining campuses, and discussed other technology issues like migrating to Windows Server, Google Apps for Education, technology planning and future workshops at the co-op.  Met Chad's new assistant Aaron.
from 7:00 to 8:00pm participated in an on-line workshop presented by IBM on using GarageBand to create podcasts and posting podcasts to Posterous.
8:00 to 9:30 pm worked on connecting to Novell server from home location through UVNC with a non-Novell client Windows box using the Windows Novell client.  Seemed to work and should be a solution for the remote access to the PD application requested by Pat Yick.  I emailed Pat, Pam, Shelby and Fenter about my progress and also Emailed David L to verify that my solution would not mess up anything in the program.

catch up

Thursday Jan 20 was a 'Snow Day'.  I came in at 7:50 thinking that maybe they would have the CIV but as I approached the co-op the snow started getting worse and worse.  I called Amber (GT) and she told me the CIV session was cancelled.  Seeing that no one else was arriving and the snow was getting worse, I drove back home.

Friday Jan 21 did some minor work on web page and hosted the CIV on Common Core Language.  I also worked on Twitter and Facebook accounts to set them up for mobile access so we could do weather related closing info etc.  (per Shelby per Pat request)

Monday Jan 24 held the e-rate workshop and helped 8 districts fill out 471s and a few to create new 470s for the consumer bandwidth project.  Also worked with Shelby concerning access to the network PD app from home locations.  From 3:15 to 5:45 worked with Kay (County Line) produce a DVD for her National Board Cert project.  After getting home and eating dinner, I worked from 7:30 to 9:45pm on setting up and correcting errors in the VPN access to the Co-op's internal network IP numbers using OpenVPN on Apple MBP and Windows.  This is to possibly access the application of PD from home locations.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Went to Lamar School district to try and get all their certified staff registered in IDEAS.  There were about 12 faculty that didn't have IDEAS registrations.  1 needed to update his school of record, 3 were not in the system, 1 was central office and not listed in the school data from IDEAS, 1 was registered but hadn't done the turtorials, the rest we got registered today.

Monday, January 17, 2011

Arrived at 7:40 and began working on using Google Apps to upload video that can be somewhat securely shared for Laura Cooke as she works on a new Special Ed certification.  Found that I have to white list users to be able to upload videos.  white listed both mine and Laura's address and refreshed and nothing.  logged out and logged back in, nothing.  Started wondering if there was a time delay as the rights propagated to all the google servers.  So caught up Friday's blog and started today's.
8:05 started working on google sites while waiting to see if the rights issue was related to server propagation.
8:25 checked back on the video rights and they were now correct.  uploaded a video and waited for it to complete processing.  At 8:30 I refreshed the page and the video shows processing complete.  I don't know when it really got finished, to it may be important to refresh the page occasionally.
10:40 stopped working on the template page for google site.  going to have to learn more of how it works.  also needed to get skype up and running to help Eric tomorrow as we try to get some remote teaching/learning set up for a home bound student.
2:40 sent out information on the commissioners memo about the required 479 to all e-rate coordinators with instructions on how to fill it out and where to send it.
been messing around a bit in social networking and other things waiting for teacher to show up that needed help with video editing.. It is nearly 4:00, I am not sure they are going to show.

Jan 4 2011

Good Morning,  Got here at 7:50 and started up the day by checking e-mail to see if any of the Supt had responded to my information on the IDEAS Registration.  Only the two from yesterday so far but it is early.  I will be monitoring a CIV session this morning in Conf H. I will only have to make sure it is working since it is staff members only.  My goals for today are to work on the Web server by backing up the site and setting up a new box to see if the site is still working (DR testing), and to continue communicating with the Supt about the IDEAS Registration.  I will be using OpenSuse 11.2 for the server install and keep with CMSMadeSimple as the CMS product for the server.

9:30 Call from Laura C (ECP Greenwood) needing help with video recording and security about special ed students for observation this was a long conversation due to security and technical issues.  suggested using google apps with a security share only to the person that needed the video.  Also suggested that she contact special ed people to verify the restrictions on security with special ed students that that issue was not technical.  Explained packet capturing and other issues that could limit the security of the video through the internet

Talked to Pat about CIV for Friday Morning for the Media Center Coordinators

10:10 Returned to installing CMSMadeSimple

Monday, January 3, 2011

I have decided to move my work journal to Blogger.  I think the organization that is built in will be better suited for this information than me having to create monthly pages and then labeling dates.  Blogger will just keep the dates in order for me.  I probably should have followed David Henderson's lead when he created his work journal this way.
I don't know if I will keep a timed journal or just a running summary of activities at this time and in fact may use a bit of both if the mood strikes me.

So far this morning I got my blog set up, caught up on email from the holidays and began updating servers.   I also sent out a few communications concerning the TCC group and our plans for the rest of the year.

I will also be using this page to maintain links to various technology related sites that can be of assistance to me as well as other techs in my coop area.

Anyway, off to work on the server updates.

Contact Jason Kersh about server back up exchange at lunch
Assisted school with e-rate questions

Separated school district IDEAS registered users lists in preparation to sending to Supt and Principals for information and generating workshop or workdays for me to assist in getting every teacher registered

Worked with County Line school discussing their possible migration to Google Apps and Mail.

well the google share didn't share only a worksheet it shared the entire spreadsheet so I will have to research if that is possible

met with Harvie about BEE project confusion.  got some information cleared up.

Research how to back up the web site to make some repairs to the system.

Work on IDEAS spreadsheets.  unfortunate learning today..  you can't share individual sheets in a workbook in Google Apps.  I will have to do a spreadsheet copy into a new spreadsheet for each district YUCK

Had to interrupt the IDEAS work to assist Pat with her computer and while I was doing that i was asked by Curtis to look at a broken shift key on his laptop.  I referred him to Shelby.  I will have to do some research on why Pat's computer is acting crazy.

Work on converting IDEAS to individual spreadsheets.

Set up a CIV with Southwest for tomorrow

discussed electronic submission of the annual report to ADE

Still working on sending the IDEAS registration sheets to send to district central office admins
have gotten some feedback from schools wanting to clear up their user data and also set up some workroom times to catch straggler registrations.

Sent all the districts their currently registered teachers lists time: 3:46
Caught up on some e-mail, checked a PLN and got ready to shut down Time: 4:04
